Tour Plan

1
09:00 AM - Hotel Pickup
Your guide meets you at your hotel in Kyoto. After a quick introduction and overview of the day ahead, transfer to the nearby train station to start your tour like a local.

09:30 AM - 11:30 AM: Fushimi Inari Shrine
Welcome to one of Kyoto's most iconic spots. As you approach, you'll see why thousands of vermilion torii gates stretching up the mountainside make this one of the most photographed places in Japan. The shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice and prosperity. Those thousands of gates? They're all donations from businesses and individuals hoping for good fortune. Your guide will explain the significance of the fox statues you'll see everywhere - they're Inari's messengers. You'll have time to walk through the main torii gate tunnels, which create an almost otherworldly orange glow. The paths wind up the mountain - you don't have to hike all the way to the top (it takes 2-3 hours), but even walking partway up gives you stunning views and photo opportunities. The higher you go, the fewer people you'll encounter. Fushimi Inari Torii Gates Take your time, soak in the atmosphere, and don't forget to grab some photos before you leave.

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM: Nishiki Market
Time for lunch, and you're in the perfect place. Nishiki Market, known as "Kyoto's Kitchen," is a narrow, covered shopping street that's been feeding the city for over 400 years. This is where you'll see (and taste) things you won't find anywhere else. Fresh seafood, pickled vegetables, tofu in forms you didn't know existed, matcha everything, grilled mochi, and local sweets. Your guide will help you navigate the stalls and explain what you're looking at—some items can be pretty mysterious if you've never seen them before. This is your lunch stop, so feel free to take the local savory as you go. Lunch is not included, but your guide will help you buy the best local food. Try the grilled wagyu skewers, fresh sashimi, or tako tamago (a small octopus stuffed with a quail egg—trust us, it's good). Most stalls offer samples, and vendors are generally friendly and used to curious international tourists. Beyond food, you'll find traditional cooking utensils, knives, and Kyoto specialties. It's a great place to pick up unique souvenirs or ingredients if you're into cooking.

2:15 PM - 4:00 PM: Gion, Shirakawa, Hanamikoji Street & Kenninji Temple
Now you're entering Kyoto's famous geisha district. Gion is where tradition lives and breathes—narrow streets lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, tea houses, and exclusive restaurants. You'll walk along Shirakawa Canal, one of the most photogenic spots in Kyoto, with its willow trees and traditional architecture reflected in the water. Then onto Hanamikoji Street, the main street through Gion. This is where you might spot a geiko (Kyoto's term for geisha) or maiko (apprentice geisha) hurrying to an appointment, though they're most active in the early evening. Gion District Streets Your guide will explain the geisha culture - what they actually do (hint: it's not what many people think), their training, and why they're still relevant today. You'll also learn about chaya (tea houses) and why you can't just walk in off the street. Next, you'll visit Kenninji Temple, Kyoto's oldest Zen temple. The atmosphere shifts completely from the busy streets to the peaceful temple grounds. You'll see stunning dragon paintings on the ceiling, serene rock gardens, and the famous twin dragons mural. Your guide will give you insight into what these gardens symbolize.
5
4:15 PM - 5:00 PM: Yasaka Shrine & Maruyama Park
Your final stops are Yasaka Shrine and Maruyama Park, both located right next to each other at the end of Gion. Yasaka Shrine is vibrant and colorful, especially in the late afternoon light. It hosts Gion Matsuri, one of Japan's most famous festivals, every July. You'll see locals stopping by for quick prayers, and your guide will show you the proper way to pray at a Shinto shrine if you'd like to try. Maruyama Park is Kyoto's most popular public park and a perfect place to end your day. In spring, it's famous for cherry blossoms, but it's beautiful year-round. If you're not too tired, there are small restaurants and tea houses around the park if you want to grab a coffee or snack before heading back.

5:00 PM - 5:30 PM: Return to the Hotel
Your guide and driver will take you back to your hotel. The tour ends.
