Try your hand at Lacquerware painting and Temari Balls
Spend your morning learning from local artisans who’ve spent years perfecting their craft. First up, you’ll paint your own set of lacquerware chopsticks using techniques passed down through generations. It’s surprisingly meditative, and yes, you get to keep them. Then you’ll try your hand at Sanuki Kagari Temari—those stunning embroidered thread balls with intricate geometric patterns that look almost impossible to make (but we promise, the artisans will guide you through it).

Tour Plan
Your guide will show you how lacquerware is made. It comes from tree sap and takes months to finish. Artisans paint many, many layers to make it shiny and smooth. They've been doing it the same way for over 1,000 years.
Now it's your turn! For one hour, you'll paint your own chopsticks. An artisan will help you every step of the way, so don't worry if you've never done this before.
You'll pick your colors and design. Want to try a traditional pattern? Go for it. Want to create your own style? That's great too! Then you'll carefully paint your chopsticks.
The best part? You get to take them home today and use them. Every time you eat with these chopsticks, you'll remember making them in Japan.
Take your time and enjoy it. There's no rush.
For 90 minutes, you'll make your own Temari ball. Don't worry—you'll start with a ball that's already prepared. Then your instructor will teach you how to wrap and stitch the thread to make patterns.
Your instructor will tell you what the patterns mean. Some patterns are wishes for happiness. Some are for good health and long life. Japanese grandmothers used to give these as special gifts with their blessings inside.
